Cupping Therapy

What is Fire Cupping Therapy?

Fire Cupping is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves placing cups on the skin and creating a vacuum, or negative pressure, by heating the air inside the cups. As it cools, the air inside the cups contracts, creating suction that draws the skin and tissue slightly into the cup. This method stimulates the flow of energy (Qi) and blood, relieves muscle tension, breaks up adhesions, stretches fascia, improves circulation, and promotes cell repair. It is effective for many types of painful conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Cups can also serve as a “non-needle approach” to stimulate acupuncture points when patients are sensitive to needles. For those who are extra sensitive, we can use plastic suction cups instead of fire glass cupping.

How Fire Cupping Works | Process

  1. Preparation: The skin is prepped with lotion or oil to ensure the cups can move smoothly (this is called sliding or running cupping) and be removed comfortably when the session is over.
  2. Heating: A flame is briefly placed inside the glass or bamboo cups to heat the air and remove oxygen from the cup, creating a vacuum or negative pressure.
  3. Placement: The depressurized cups are then swiftly placed on the target tissue or specific acu-points on the body. Most common area's to cup are on the shoulders, back, legs, and arms.
  4. Session: The cups are left in place for 5-15 minutes, during which the area of application may redden due to the expansion of blood vessels.

Benefits of Fire Cupping

  • Pain Relief: Effective in relieving many types of pain and muscle stiffness.
  • Fascia Release: Cupping is particularly good as a fascia release technique. It can be very hard to release the fascia, due to its strong fibrous makeup. Fascia contracts and becomes sticky and tangled when the muscles are injured.  To release fascia, you usually need to either stretch and hold the tissue for a few minutes, such as with Cupping technique, or strongly scrape across the muscle and fascia, such as with a Gua sha tool.
  • Enhanced Circulation: Increases blood flow to the areas where the cups are placed, enhancing overall circulatory health.
  • Reduced Inflammation: By promoting blood flow, cupping helps reduce swelling and inflammation.
  • Immune health/Lung health: Traditionally, cupping has been used as a way to treat common colds and respiratory conditions by cupping along the back and helping bring blood flow to the lungs as well as stimulate acupuncture points that boost the immune system.
  • Detoxification: Encourages tissues to release toxins and stimulates the lymphatic system.
  • Relaxation: Cupping therapy can relieve stress and tension, similar to the effects of deep-tissue massage.

Is Fire Cupping Safe?

Fire Cupping is a safe procedure when performed by a trained and experienced practitioner. The most common side effect is discoloration of the skin, which typically fades within a few days, and occasional mild bruising. During your consultation, we will discuss your medical history and any current health conditions to ensure that Fire Cupping is a safe option for you.

I have been working with Jamie 2x per week for the past couple of weeks. He is extremely attentive, understanding and thorough. I was nervous to start with acupuncture because of my herniated disc and fear of needles but he has made the experience feel very safe and comfortable. I’ve noticed a decrease in pain after suffering for over a year. Highly recommend!

I recently had an incredible experience at this place, and I don't even know where to begin. I found myself in unbearable back pain, unable to stand up straight, and unsure of what caused it. Fortunately, I was able to schedule a prompt appointment, and Jamie's expertise was truly amazing! After receiving both cupping and acupuncture treatments, I noticed a remarkable improvement right away and within just two days, i was 95% back to my normal self. Don't hesitate to book an appointment here—it made a significant difference for me.

I have been going to Lakewood Community Acupuncture for over a year and can’t imagine my life without it now!! It can truly help with so much - from physical pain (I have issues with my pelvic floor and multiple herniated discs) to emotional blocks, energy deficiencies and more! I ALWAYS feel better after acupuncture. I’ve seen all the practitioners and they are all extremely skilled, but Crystal is my go-to. She is not only very gentle and effective but always a delight to connect with. For the quality of service, atmosphere and price, you cannot do better. It’s been a game changer for me. Wholeheartedly recommend!!
